"THINGS GET REAL"
The world your heroes live in is the world outside your window...
Atlantis is a myth, psychics are frauds who manipulate their way through cold-readings, and gamma radiation just gives you cancer. Super-heroics are exclusively the purview of comics and films. The universe is a colder, less fantastical place - one that you're all familiar with. It's your world. The "real" world. And in the real world... people are being murdered.
The media has dubbed the most prolific serial slasher in years "the Magician." He carves a series of indecipherable magic-looking symbols in and around the bodies of his victims. The symbols have no clear pattern, nor do the victims. With confirmed slayings throughout the country, anyone could be next. FBI Director Nick Fury knows there must be some connection... but what?
Meanwhile, a homeless man on the streets of Manhattan mutters desperate pleas that most deem gibberish as they make every effort to ignore him. "Something went wrong with the Crucible!" "Everything special got stolen!" "He kills the special people to take their fantasy, which is really reality!" "I'm the only one who can see it!" But why would anyone, let alone two passersby - foreign dignitary Victor VonDamme and ex-surgeon Stephen Strange - ever listen to the rag-covered vagabond that goes by the name Stabbity Jones? Maybe because they might just be the Magician's next targets!
The unbelievable universe spanning event that has changed everything begins here! Who will survive?

"AS REAL AS IT GETS"
The world your heroes live in is the world outside your window...
Victor Van Damme is a European dignitary working at the United Nations. Stephen Strange is a Greenwich Village yoga instructor. They couldn't be more different, and they couldn't dislike each other more.... The only two things that bind them together are a deranged homeless man and a serial killer! Both have narrowly escaped the slasher known as "the Magician," though their acquaintances were not so fortunate, and both were warned about the slasher by Stabitty Jones. Evading Nick Fury, Director of the FBI, who has targeted Stabbitty as a person of interest in the murders, the unlikely trio escapes to an isolated cabin in the woods outside New York City in Rockland County. Stabbitty seems to be the only one who knows how the Magician is choosing his victims, but as Strange and Van Damme try to make sense of Stabbitty's fantastic story in order to warn others, have they inadvertently set themselves up for a night of horror? There's someone else in these woods!

"MEDDLING KIDS"
The world your heroes live in is the world outside your window...
Victor Van Damme and Stephen Strange have survived a night in the woods with the deranged homeless man Stabbity Jones. Others are not so lucky... but there were revelations. Apparently, in the "real world," Stephen was not a master of yoga but a master of the mystic arts, and Victor was not a mere foreign dignitary but a super villain known as"Doctor Doom." This is why they're being targeted by the mysterious serial killer known as the "Magician." All those who are "supposed" to have fantastic powers are potential victims. But that means the killer somehow knows "the truth" that Stabbity somehow knows - but that's impossible... isn't it?
They might not have any super-powers at the moment, but that doesn't mean Victor and Stephen can't get proactive! It's time to go after the Magician and find out once and for all who this slasher really is and what sinister insanity motivates him! But since they don't know where to find him, they have to make the Magician come to them. And to do that, they've got to assemble his potential targets... but is this the Magician's greatest trick of all? He'll have his targets right where he wants them!

"THE MAN BEHIND THE MAGIC" - Penultimate Issue!
The world your heroes live in is the world outside your door...
From the mind of a killer.
It's simple enough, isn't it? Have you put together what's been happening? Hrm, perhaps I do need to explain. You see, when the all-powerful Crucible found its way into our dimension, it absorbed all the magic. It took everything that made it "super." It killed the fantasy. But I want the fantasy back more than anyone. It's all I want... but I want it all. So when I crack open the Crucible and release its contents back into the world like Pandora's Box, I need the previous hosts of that power to be empty vessels - that way the power has nowhere to go but directly into me! That's why I need to kill every single would-be superhero and villain in this pedestrian, mundane world I find myself so inexorably trapped in. They call me the Magician, but what I'm doing is no trick. It's my path to reclaiming the omnipotence I once possessed but unfairly lost. I've been very busy, but my work is nearing completion. I think it's time you find out who the slasher you've feared so much really is... Or have you already guessed?

"NO MORE MAGIC" - Final Issue!
The world your heroes live in is the world outside your door...
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Take absolute power away from someone already absolutely corrupted, and they will murder who and whatever it takes to get it back! The Beyonder could do anything, and then he lost his powers (see DEFENDERS #9). Mephisto could make any bargain, and then he lost his powers (see CABAL #6). They worked together to kill the fantasy as "the Magician," a plan they've been concocting for a very long time (see DEFENDERS #13). Now, the source of ultimate power - the Crucible - will be claimed by either the Beyonder, Mephisto, or the most unlikely Defender of all: the last knifeman in the west, Stabitty Jones! One of them will have all the power... and the world will never be the same!
